world flagsRepresentatives from countries of Africa and the African Diaspora have been invited to participate in the “Parade of Flags” ceremony during the 2016 African Diaspora World Tourism (ADWT) Awards & Travel Expo. The “Parade of Flags” is in recognition of the United Nations’ declaration of the International Decade of People of African Descent.

According to the UN Proclamation: “The International Decade for People of African Descent, proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 68/237 and to be observed from 2015 to 2024, provides a solid framework for the United Nations, Member States, civil society and all other relevant actors to join together with people of African descent and take effective measures for the implementation of the programme of activities in the spirit of recognition, justice and development.”

“Our plans are to have representatives of Embassies, Consulates and Tourism Offices carrying their country’s flags in possession,” says Kitty J. Pope, the founder/director and executive producer of the ADWT-Awards and Travel Expo event. “We strongly feel that the “Parade of Flags” would serve as a tribute of commemoration of International Decade of People of African Descent as well as a symbol of the promotion of world peace and multiculturalism.

The 2016 ADWT-Awards event, the 2nd historical awards event that takes place in Atlanta, Ga. (USA) on this August 26-28 recognizes destinations, historic sites and tourism leaders of influence in the global African Diaspora as well as Africa. In addition to honoring influential leaders, the noteworthy event that also includes a Travel Expo, serves to highlight the cultural heritage of people of African descent from around the globe.

UNEmbassies, Consulates and Tourism Boards of various countries with significant populations of people of African descent are invited to participate in the “Parade of Flags” which include African countries in addition to countries of the global African Diaspora. In support of the UN’s International Decade of People of African Descent, countries of the African Diaspora and Africa are asked to highlight structures, sites, trails, people and all things related to black cultural heritage in the promotion of tourism to their perspective countries.

Embassy and Tourism officials of the various countries of Africa and the African Diaspora are also invited to participate in the Pan African and African Travel Forum and Travel Expo that will take place in the morning and afternoon on Saturday, August 27th before the awards gala that evening.

The support and participation of the embassies, consulates and tourism boards for the 2016 African Diaspora World Tourism Awards and Travel Expo is very much needed and appreciated. If this event is anything like the inaugural event where dignitaries, officials and professionals from around the world attended, it promises to be an enormous success!

1The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba, Dr. Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, will make a monumental historic visit to the United States of America in June where he will visit several states with his entourage. The Ooni of Ife’s visit to the United States has a goal of fostering the relationships of citizens of the Tropic Africa, the source (Ile-Ife) and to attract foreign investors to the source for economic development of all Yoruba land region and environs. Upon his visit, HIM, Oba, Dr. Adeyeye will be reaching out to leaders and officials of the US and the Diaspora regarding business development in in terms of cultural and heritage tourism.

Since his coronation on December 7, 2015 in Ile-Ife (The Land of Expansion), the source, HIM commenced plans to fulfill his vision of all Yoruba indigenes both home and diaspora and to economically develop Ile-Ife and other Oduduwa states. During HIM’s short period on the throne of Ooni, his campaign is mainly focused on peace, love, unity and progress, and as well economic development of Yoruba land as he belief they are all children of Oduduwa. Ooni of Ife, Oba, Dr. Adeyeye has contributed tremendously to the growth and economic development of Nigeria most especially, Ile-Ife his origin, and HIM continues to focus on creating jobs for the unemployed in the Nigeria. Since inception of HIM stall to the throne of Ooni of Ife, he has been able to harmonize the relationships between all the Yoruba Royal fathers/leaders and with the federal government of Nigeria.

2Ooni of Ife, Oba, Dr. Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi’s official visit to the United States is designed to bridge the gaps among the Yoruba at home and in diaspora, and also to identify with children of Oduduwa among the Africans-Americans in the United States. His campaign for development of Ile-Ife is promoting Ife-Ife as the origin and cradle of the blacks and a major tourist center in Africa; hence, Ife will be a great source of revenue for the state (Osun State) and for Nigeria as a whole. Ife-Ife is endowed with a lot of agricultural commodities, solid minerals, ancient arts and sculptures, and as well rich in culture and tradition. As an indication that there are investment opportunities in Ile-Ife, the Ooni of Ife, HIM, Oba, Dr. Adeyeye’s has completed two major projects: Ife Grand Resort and his castle in Ile-Ife.

During his official US visit, Dr. Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi will be in the country for almost the entire month of June. The opening press conference and Empowerment Summit will be at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. While in New York, he will visit Columbia University and the Museum of African Diasporian Art. From June 16-18th is the Awards Leadership Gala at Gaylord Hotels in Maryland. The King will visit Washington, DC from June 21-23 for a State Dept. and White House Reception and later a forum and reception at the US Congress Capitol Hill. Honorary African Diaspora World Tourism Awards

These ten awards are our top awards in honor of outstanding trailblazers who have helped to clear the path for black cultural heritage tourism development.

1) Outstanding Tour Operator Award: - This award is in honor of Freddy and Jake Henderson of the USA, the first black tour operators in the US to start taking groups to Africa. It goes to tour operators and travel agents who have worked hard taking travelers to Africa and places of the African Diaspora while educating them about black culture and heritage. 

2) Outstanding Scholar:  This award is in honor of Dr. Yosef Alfredo Antonio Ben-Jochannan, an Ethiopian, prominent Afro-centric scholars who devoted much of his life to highlighting the indigenous origins of African civilizations. The award goes to educators to bring awareness and knowledge about different aspects (some unknown) of black culture and heritage to students and the general public. 

3) Outstanding Researcher:  This award is named in honor of Cheikh Anta Diop, a noted Senegalese historian in the development of the 'Afro-centric' view and the theory that the ancient Egyptians were black Africans. This award is for scholars who have done extensive research in origins and theories related to black culture and heritage. 

4) Outstanding Professor/Lecturer: This award is in honor of Dr. John Henri Clark, an American scholar, educator and the founder and first president of the African Heritage Studies Association who obtained his doctorate degree at the age of 78. This award goes to professors and lecturers who have done superb jobs educating college students and the public about the rich heritage and culture of the people of African descent. 

5) Outstanding African Diaspora Heritage Trail:  This award is in honor of Dr. David Allen and Dr. Ewart Brown of Bermuda who put in place the African Diaspora Heritage Trails conference and reignited interest in preserving and visiting black cultural heritage sites. It goes to destinations that have done much work toward preserving, sustaining and enhancing their black heritage trails. 

6) Outstanding Museum or Cultural Center:  This award is in honor of the USA's iconic world sports hero Muhamed Ali and his wife Lonnie for his legacy, and for both of them working together to establish one of the foremost cultural heritage centers in the world. This award goes to cultural centers that have continuously enhanced their programs and worked toward bringing black heritage and culture to the forefront in their communities and beyond. Gombey Dancers of Bermuda

7) Outstanding Carnivals/ Festivals/Events:  This award is named in honor of Claudia Jones, London-based civil rights activist and founder of the Nottingham Carnival in the United Kingdom. The award goes to the best recently debuting festival and/or progressive festival that represents the richness and celebratory aspects of black culture and heritage while influencing tourism. 

8) Outstanding Travel Book: This award is in honor of Victor Hugo Green, an American postal worker and civic leader who, during the time of segregation, created the first travel guidebook for people of color in the United States that later became known as the Green Book. This award is for authors and editors of books on black travel, and culture and heritage tourism in the African Diaspora. 

9) Outstanding Leadership and Good Governance Award:  This award is in honor of Nigerian Governor Godswill Akpabio, who has contributed tirelessly to infrastructure to support tourism and tourism development. This award goes to civic, political and governmental officials who have done the same and also worked to pass laws and legislation in support of tourism initiatives that can lead to the acknowledgement and promotion of black cultural and heritage tourism. 

10) Outstanding Cultural Heritage Tourism Educator:  This award is in honor of Dr. Edward W. Robinson, Jr., an American attorney, historian, author and professor, who created the 'African Genesis Theory,' which serves to reunite African-Americans with their true ancestral beginnings and their accomplishments. His work spun many study groups to Africa. This award goes to leaders who have conducted educational and research tours in black culture and heritage for students and young people. 

 

African Diaspora World Tourism VIP Award

This awards category recognizes VIP Officials of distinction who have contributed to cultural heritage tourism development.

1) African Tourism Ministers of Distinction: This award goes to African ministers of tourism or tourism directors who have done much toward promoting their country on the world stage as well as their culture and heritage in such a way as to significantly influence tourism. 

2) Caribbean Tourism Ministers of DistinctionThis award goes to Caribbean minister of tourisms or tourism directors who have done much toward promoting their country on the world stage and also their culture and heritage. 

3) Tourism Executives of Distinction: - This award goes to tourism professionals who have made efforts and inroads in the tourism industry in such a way that has enhanced the development and promotion of black travel and black cultural heritage tourism. 

4) Cultural Heritage Preservationists of Distinction:  This award goes to persons who have taken it upon themselves to start initiatives, campaigns and/or fundraisers for historic sites in order to rebuild, enhance, preserve and protect a site that may otherwise have completely deteriorated or gone unrecognized. 

5) Cultural Heritage Tour Operator of Distinction:  This awards go to travel agents and tour operators who have excelled in promoting black cultural heritage tourism and tourism to Africa and its diaspora. 

6) Travel Association of Distinction: This award goes to an association or organization that has promoted black travel and cultural tourism, and has educated the public about of cultural tourism. 

7) Slavery Reconciliation and Healing Leader of Distinction: This awards goes to leaders who have worked hard to heal and commemorate the legacy of slavery in the United States.

8) Spiritual Traditions Preservationist of Distinction: This award goes to leaders who have helped to educate people about and keeping alive African spirituality and cultural traditons.

9) Carnival, Event or Festival of Distinction: This award goes to leaders who have presented unique festivals that have helped to promote tourism and bring people of the together for unity.

10) Museum or Cultural Center of Distinction: This award goes to a museum that has best showcased black life, heritage and history in a way that educates the public, and promotes and sustains African Diaspora cultural heritage.

seychThe Seychelles Tourism Board has confirmed the dates of the 2016 edition of the island's Carnaval International de Victoria, the event set to continue to bring together the different cultures and people from around the world to one place.

Dubbed as the ‘carnival of carnivals’, Carnaval International de Victoria, now going in its sixth year will be held from April 22 to 24. 

“Nothing is more uniting, and nothing promotes social cohesion more than 'festivals' to which all people contribute" said Minister Alain St.Ange, the island's Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture following discussions with Claire Holder of the Notting Hill Carnival of the UK on their participation once again. Minister St.Ange announced that the Celebration of “National Unity" will be the theme of Carnival 2016 in Seychelles.

This spectacular event held over three days in the heart of the Seychelles capital Victoria was baptised under the theme ‘the melting pot of cultures’.

The carnival has since 2011 received great visibility with the representatives from top media houses coming from Europe, Middle East, Americas, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
Over the past five years, the carnival has been known to be the biggest cultural manifestation in Seychelles, bringing together the best carnivals of the world to its shores such as the Brazilian group, the Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company of the UK , Düsseldorf carnival of Germany, the Italy Carnival, the Indonesian Carnival to name but a few. Cultural Troupes from the Community of Nations have also descended on the islands to parade alongside with delegations of the best carnivals of the world.

The carnival celebrated its fifth anniversary last year where again top international dignitaries graced the three-day event with their presence. 

In discussions with the Seychelles Tourism Board prior to confirming the dates for the 2016 edition of the carnival Minister Alain St.Ange said that many nations have jumped on the tourism ‘bandwagon’ and tourism represents an integral and important element of broader economic and social development policy. But what differentiates one nation from another is, among other things, the quality and value derived from the attractions, both natural and man-made. The Seychelles International Carnival should therefore be designed to aim at the ‘spectacularisation’ of the culture and heritage of the Seychelles Islands because tourists often demand ‘authentic’ exhibitions of culture and lifestyles which are considerably different from their own. The Carnival should also aim to express and showcase the modernity of the Seychelles without any loss of the charm of its traditional values and history.

“Every year we spend time searching for the Soul of Seychelles through the Eyes of Carnival. We know carnivals of festivals remain a motivation of economic activity through the cultural and artistic creations and the general impact on infrastructure provisions. We also know that during carnival time our country benefits of the visitor expenditure multiplier effect in the fields of food production, catering, hospitality, hotels, crafts and souvenir production" 
Minister St.Ange said adding that cultural contacts are seen to be strong drive and magnet for world peace and the perceived roles of the Seychelles in that process is set to be more appreciated as the more and more countries use the Seychelles cultural event to showcase their own culture and develop relationships with other nations from the Community of Nations. 

The Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria continues to establish a close correlation between carnival attractions that bring together the arts, culture, history and heritage of Seychelles as it works in tandem with other countries who are proud of their own culture to showcase to the world media the unity through diversity and this immaterial of the colour of the skin, religious beliefs and political affiliation. 

“Today we know that the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria has carved itself a unique place in the culture of Carnival, in that our carnaval invites the world to participate. There is no doubt that the Carnival has become an important feature in the calendrical cycle of tourism in Seychelles. However we also know that our carnaval needs to be more grounded in the history and culture of Seychelles, which Seychelles invites the world to experience. This we shall be working on for the coming edition in April" said Minister St.Ange as he went on to explain that tourists today want a more inter-active experience in which they are also immersed in the culture and history of the destination and are able to experience the story of the Seychellois. 

“This can be done through Carnaval and is consistent with the underlying concept of “Searching for the Soul of Seychelles through the Eyes of Carnival” which simply means that the Carnaval must be used to tell the story of Seychelles and its people through arts, design and performance of themes that are uniquely Seychellois. We are a melting pot culture in so many different ways and meaning can be given to this through the “Eyes of Carnival”. Through the carnaval the celebration of our very own diversity would resonate with the rest of the world where there are so many conflicts and ethnic tensions, the resolution of which has defeated most politicians, campaigners, institutions etc. The reality is that globalisation has turned the world into such a melting pot, that no assumptions can be made about ethnicity – everyone has a touch of somebody else in their DNA" Minister Alain St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria remains a simple celebration of diversity and is a very important catalyst for conflict resolution and togetherness, and an instrument for telling the history of globalisation as it impacts on tourism destinations.

“You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one…this is why we are inviting our partner countries, International Carnivals, Cultural Troupes from the Community of Nations and also from the Seychelles itself all government ministries, non-government organisations, the business community and tourism trade partners to take part in the upcoming sixth Carnaval International de Victoria" Minister Alain St.Ange said.

charlotteThis is a call for papers for the 40th National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) Conference—“Forty Years of Black Studies in the Local, National and Global Spaces: Past Accomplishments and New Directions”—to take place on March 16-19, 2016, in Charlotte, North Carolina. On the heels of the establishment of the first generation of Black Studies departments and programs across the United States, starting from 1968, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte hosted a conference of Black Studies scholars in March 1975 to create a national organization that would help guide the standardization of the curriculum, mission, and the accreditation of Black Studies academic units. It was from that meeting that the National Council for Black Studies was created in July 1975. Forty years later, the field of Black Studies has grown into a formidable discipline and field of study with more than 200 degree programs at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels in the United States alone. The 2016 conference of the National Council for Black Studies offers a critical juncture to reflect on the difficulties and accomplishments that have accompanied the institutionalization of Black Studies in the academy, as well as the new opportunities and emerging challenges that deserve the attention of scholars, activists, and policy makers regarding the condition of black people globally.

Participants are invited to present new theoretical and empirical studies as well as new models of practice and social activism on a wide range of topics that deal with the Black experience globally and across time. The NCBS therefore invites abstracts for individual papers, panels, posters, roundtable discussions, and workshops on various aspects of Black Studies that are informed by historical and social science analyses, arts and literary criticism, philosophical reflections, and spiritual interventions, among others, especially as these may relate to the issues of race, migration, citizenship, social justice, Pan-Africanism, environmental and social sustainability, globalization, diaspora formations, development and economic empowerment, moral economy, community formation, sexuality, and gender. We welcome you to submit abstracts that explore transnational, transcultural, transgendered approaches; studies that are place or region specific; as well those that explore the questions of modernity and the challenges of its “post” manifestations and reifications such as postcoloniality, postmodernity, and postraciality. You are encouraged to dig deep into the intellectual history of Africana Studies and use this background to formulate inter-generational and inter-geographic theories about the black experience. We are also looking for studies that amplify and challenge seemingly centered and settled perspectives in order to explore new directions in Black Studies. For example, what does it mean to be Africa-centered in the 21st century in the face of the new media, digital revolution, and hyper-globalization? What pedagogical tools make Black Studies necessary for developing a culture-conscious and history-literate global citizenry? What new insights do we offer for creating a just world? How do we develop frameworks of multi-tiered social responsibility at the individual, family, community, national, corporate, and multinational levels for sustainable and ethical solutions to the challenges of racism, mass incarceration, poverty, political apathy, and anti-black violence? We seek to develop a conference program that defines the global black presence in accordance with the original Pan-African vision of Black Studies. Hence, scholars working on the black experience in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia are invited to submit abstracts.

Interested participants, established and emerging scholars, students and social activists, should send a 150-400 word abstract for a panel (one for the panel subject and one for each panelist), and/or individual paper and poster presentations. For roundtable discussions and workshop, please submit a 500-word abstract. All abstracts must be submitted online not later than November 16.

Even before the start of The Jamaica Film Festival from July 7-11 in Kingston, new Jamaican screenplays and contemporary writers, directors and producers - the 'content creators' - are getting international exposure.

Jampro's Film Commissioner Carole Beckford says the it has been coming in a number of ways. One is through a visit that she and other interested parties made to Los Angeles, California, in the United States, between March 10 and 16.

"We met with some of the best movie producers in the business in the black community of the city and we found out that Jamaica is indeed a location they are interested in - and not just for filming. They want to work with us," Beckford told me recently.

She pointed out that this is quite a change. "Jamaica has been a backdrop to Hollywood for so long. It was deemed only a location for filming," Beckford explained. Now, producers are discovering the island has both technical film-making expertise and competent content creators.  In Beckford's words, "the film festival aims to show that the content producers are just as competitive as their technical peers."

A video conveying what the film festival hopes to achieve was screened in Los Angeles, and a trailer for the Jamaican films now being made for the film festival will be to shown at the Penn Relays between April 23 and 25. The trailer will piggyback on the tremendous athletic presence that Jamaica has traditionally had at the relays.

Following JAMPRO's call for scripts late last year, 54 entries were received. From that, 15, submitted by 13 writer-directors, were chosen for production. From February 9-13, the directors, along with actors, took part in an acting master class conducted at the Creative Production and Training Centre by American actress/educator/ director Cassandra Freeman.

"The focus was on acting, but it also dealt with how to direct the actors," Beckford said. "She (Freeman) does the acting master class as part of her job." Beckford said Freeman, a fellow at Fordham University and lecturer at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, has shown her films at a number of festivals. These include the prestigious Sundance Film Festival and Freeman has also facilitated a film-development project in Rwanda.

Curious about the dozens of scripts not among the 15 selected, I asked if they would be placed in a drawer somewhere and forgotten. Beckford assured me that would not be their fate. "Some of the writers asked back for their scripts and will probably work on them," she said. "But all of them will be invited to participate in the film festival and they will get to attend the business meetings and to speak with experts in the industry. Most are coming from the US and Canada and we may have two others from the UK and the Caribbean."

The film projects being worked on for the film festival are in the categories short features, documentaries and narratives, and include two animation products. All the films are short - under 40 minutes - and their themes include drama, comedy and tragedy. Beckford said the scripts were subject to analysis by stakeholders and the producers have been involved in discussions with various sponsors.

Writer/director Dahlia Harris, one of the entrants who got two projects accepted (the other is Chris Browne), told me "we the film-makers are still in need of funding and we urge the private sector to partner with us. We are willing to have them view the scripts and/or treatments to see how we can help to position their brands globally."

Beckford said production of the films entails content producers working with their technical peers. Each of the 15 projects calls for up to 30 people working with the producers on casting, location, editing, marketing, and more. "I've been telling them I need your posters, I need the images that will go on your cover, I need to know how you will present yourselves," Beckford said, speaking very much like the publicist she was when working with Usain Bolt. (She has found that sports publicity and film publicity have much in common.)

Beckford insists that the business aspect of the festival is as important as the screenings and formal face-to-face business sessions will take place daily. Topics will include how to get into the market, what the film business is like now and what it will be, as well as packaging.

She insisted that there must also be discussion in the many markets now available to film-makers. "Back in the day, we only had big screen and television. Now we have Google, Urban TV, Netflix, Afro Stream, YouTube and more. Content producers everywhere in the world have greater opportunities now, but they will have to package it in a particular way to meet global demands," Beckford said.

Discussion on the music element of film is of vital importance, Beckford said. Tuff Gong has partnered with JAMPRO for the festival and there will be a Music Day on which the business of music and film will be discussed. "We're expecting that the shooting and editing of the films will be completed by May, for the films have to be judged in June and put through the (post-production) process for premiering in July," Beckford told me.

Also in June, there will be the viewing of international films entered for the festival. So far, there have been 140 submissions.
