Beginning summer 2011, the National Mall in Washington D.C. will be home to a new memorial honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The memorial will be set in a very prominent place- right between the Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson memorials and across from the Franklin D. Roosevelt memorial. Communicating three themes of justice, democracy and hope, which all played major roles in King's teachings, the memorial honors King's contributions to the national as well as the international community. The 30-foot tall Stone of Hope, a stonework statue of King, will be the memorial's centerpiece and include inscriptions of King's speeches.
