Brent Weaver had already graduated from college with a degree in accounting and had snagged a job with the Federal government in Washington, DC before the travel bug bit him. Years later he set a goal to visit all 50 states by the time he was 50 years old. The then thirty-eight year old man reached that goal 12 years later, just shy of his 50th birthday.

And if 50 by 50 is not enough, he did the fiftieth state of the union last. Though he had not really planned it that way, it turned out that he was off to Hawaii as the last leg of his 50-state journey to attend the NFL All Star Pro Bowl game as a birthday present for himself. Talk about the big five-0!

In October 2005, I visited Lima, Perú for the first time, my goal being to immerse myself in the Spanish language as I had done in Cuba and Mexico several years prior. In Lima, I met only a handful of blacks, but during my weekend trips to the Southern Perúvian district of El Carmen, I was introduced to the black life of Perú, along with that of indigenous ancestries, such as the Inca and Amayra people. I stayed with a prominent musical family known as the Ballumbrosio family where the father, the late, great Amador Ballumbrosio, played a major role in reviving and promoting Afro-Perúvian music and dance which, today, are national treasures. I expected to spend money on entertainment, but as it turned out,

When I moved from Montreal to Tokyo, I was excited about discovering new food, learning a new language, and seeing old temples—all of which I did.  But no one told me that I would also find Caribbean-themed restaurants, girls wearing bomber jackets with “respect the black woman” or “black for life” written on the back, guys hanging out in old Cadillacs that they had converted into low riders, and Japanese dudes that speak better Jamaican Patois than I could ever imitate.  In my naivety, I wondered where was the ancient land of the mysterious orient I had envisioned?  I was experiencing my very own unique version of culture shock.
